The Novel contact lens is the umbrella category in which fit all other interrelated contact lens groups: Wild Eyes®, Crazy Contacts®, theatrical contact lenses, Exotic Eyes®, and decorative contact lens. All of these novelty contact lenses have similar, if not the exact same, descriptions and serve similar purposes. Some novelty contact lenses include spider webs, checker boards, flowery eyes, bloodshot, cat eyes, black eyes, white eyes, mirrored contacts, American flags, sports emblems, and even multicolored contact lenses. Unnatural eye-colored contacts, such as aqua, deep red, orange, and purple, which are marketed under Freshlook ®, are also a form of novelty contact lens. Color creates mood, which affects perception and feeling in those individuals who gaze into them, so the novelty here is to promote a unique attraction or appeal that regular eye contacts do not. That is basically the definition and purpose of a novelty contact lens, “novelty” meaning “not for the purpose of correcting ocular or optical aberrations, or enhancing vision.” Novelty contact lens, then, are for the sole purpose of having fun.
That, however, has its concerns and its restrictions. Many non-prescription novelty contact lenses, which do exist, have been known to cause blindness and cornea injury in wearers, especially children (one 14-year-old required a cornea transplant after wearing non-prescription novelty contact lenses). Novelty contact lenses are not inherently problematic or dangerous; many of the problems have, perhaps, incurred through mishandling, but that may have been only due to the possibility that these children, teens, and their parents weren’t aware of the need for care or that even novelty contact lenses also require orbit specifications for custom-made lenses. Furthermore, many teens have been known to share their novelty contacts with friends. Just because novelty contact lenses are not corrective or serve to enhance clear vision (i.e. meaning that they are medically designed) doesn’t mean that they cannot cause similar injuries or eye damage that prescription contact lenses can. Novelty contact lens cases provide safety for these kinds of contact lenses, which should also be cleaned thoroughly before and after each wearing. Regulation was passed in Congress in 2005 to ensure that all contact lenses—including novelty contact lenses—are sold, purchased, and used under the guidance of a licensed eye care professional. Therefore, a prescription for all novelty contacted lenses is strongly recommended.
After a prescription has been obtained, interested individuals can easily find novelty contact lenses cheap. Discount prices are also available. Any cheap novelty contact lens can be ordered through the Internet at various sites that specialize in the novelty contact lens. Cheap, discount deals provide many opportunities for those individuals with little or no money, such as non-working teenagers, to purchase novelty contact lenses at affordable prices.
Novelty contact lenses offer a sense of independence and self-expression that cannot be copied or equaled. This, of course, is the most appealing ideal regarding any kind of novelty contact lenses.
